Heating Repair Job

We received a phone call today at 7am from an elderly customer, who was rather concerned that her electric overnight storage heating had not worked for two nights and that as you can imagine she was beginning to feel the effects of the cold with overnight tempertaures close to freezing.

Our diary for all the electricians was already full for the day but you know that feeling you get when you know you just need to do what you can to re-jig the diary and help this customer. So thats what we did and I managed myself to attend mid-morning and as you can see from the photo, people should never under estimate what electricity in the home can do when things go wrong and why its always a good idea to have an electrician periodically inspect the electrics in your property.

A loose connection within the main switch had went undetected for while which resulted in this nasty burning of the cable and switches, which as you can imagine could have led to a much worse situation.

Thankfully though less than two hours later we had fitted new parts and managed to get some heat back in the home of this elderly customer.

You know after these types of jobs you get a scense of a warm glow that you know that a job you have done had made someone happy and I suppose thats what makes it all worthwhile.

Apprentice Wins Award

Press Release:-

LOCAL ELECTRICAL APPRENTICE WINS AWARD

An apprentice with Fallin-based electrical contractor Stirling Electrical Services Ltd. has won the Apprentice Of The Year award, following in the footsteps of company director, Scott McLean.

Murray Smith from Alva has been awarded the Apprentice Of The Year award for 2nd year electrical apprentice work at Clackmannan College by electrical training organisation, the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT).

The award for Murray follows a similar award to Stirling Electrical Services Ltd. owner Scott McLean in 1993 when he was awarded 1st year electrical Apprentice of the Year for Central, Fife and Perthshire Areas by SECTT.

Murray was presented with his award at a recent awards event in Perth and speaking afterwards, owner Scott McLean said “This is a fantastic achievement for Murray and is justified recognition for the dedication and hard work he has put in over the past two years. Murray has now set a good base for his future training and opportunities for development within the company over the coming years.

Having benefited from a good apprenticeship myself, I understand the importance an employer can play in the development and training of apprentices and how apprentices play an important role in the development and shaping of a company. Stirling Electrical Services Ltd. has grown steadily over the past twelve years, and I believe that this award is not only recognition for Murray but also to our other electricians and apprentices who have all played a part in the growth of the company.”

Building Warrant Work in Scotland

In May 2005, a new system was brought in to enforce the Building Regulations in Scotland.
It aims to improve the standard of building work. The new system includes rules for electrical installations, which has been controlled by the Building Regulations for many years.

Under the new system, any electrical work carried out under a building warrant (the legal permission you need from the local authority to start building work) will either have to be approved by a registered installer (known formally as an ‘approved certifier’) or be checked by the local authority. What is the building standards system in Scotland?

Stirling Electrical Services Ltd. are an Approved Body and employ Approved Certifiers - full information on the service we provide for Building Warrant Work can be found on our website

You can find full details about the building standards system in Scotland on the Scottish Building Standards website at www.sbsa.gov.uk.

For even more information you can download this excellent leaflet by The Electrical Safety Council on the Building Standards in Scotland.

SELECT INSPECTION

We recently had our routine Technical Inspection by our electrical trade organisation SELECT and I am delighted to announce that we passed and can continue to work under the umbrella of SELECT.

SELECT Members are recognised and respected for the safety, quality and technical excellence of their work and as a company we are proud of our membership of SELECT, which we believe gives our clients and prospective clients reassurance that our company strive to deliver an excellent standard of electrical work.

We believe the standard of electrical work we undertake must be coupled with providing a high standard of customer service, which must be consistent throughout our relationship with clients.

Photo Updates

January is nearly over and 2008 is already one month down. This time of year is always very busy for us at Stirling Electrical Services Ltd. and I have not had much time to blog. I'm determined to find time in our busy schedule to post on here so look out for more posts in February.

Until the next post here are a couple of links to photos.

The first link is from my New Year trip to Isle of Bute with my wife Jennie, where we stayed at St Blanes Hotel, Kilchattan Bay. click to view photos

And one of the many jobs in January was to carry out the electrical, networking and audio visual work in converting a foyer space at the Falkirk Wheel into an Information Centre - click for a few photos of our work

Electropedia

I came across this new website today - Electropedia, which is a database of electrical and electronic terms and definitions.

A few customer's may find it interesting, but I'm sure the people involved in this line of work will find it a useful resource if it fully develops - especially apprentices.

The definitions also translate into French, German and Spanish, which may not be a bad thing as Europe continues to try and force their wiring regulations and systems on us in these shores. eg the new wiring colours introduced in 2006.

LogMeIn

I came across "LogMeIn" last week which is really helping us develop our new admin project quicker.

LogMeIn is a free download utility that allows you to access your computer from any web browser from anywhere in the world.

So we set up LogMeIn on two of our office computers which is allowing us to work on our admin project away from the office.

There is a free version of LogMeIn which will allow you remote access and full control of your computer and is available from here

New Admin Project Begins

Work Begins on Exciting Project
We have begun an in-house project that will revolutionise the way the company does business. As the growth of our company continues and in order to maintain the highest levels of customer service to which we base our whole business idea around, we are completely reviewing our whole administration process.

The project will involve implementing new job/scheduling systems and analysing and improving our whole process of customer service.

We recognise that as the growth of our company continues we must look at ways to improve our service and once the initial stage of this new project is complete in 8-10 weeks we believe the whole process of doing business with Stirling Electrical Services will be one of the best around and will take our current good customer relations to another level.

We will keep customers aware of the progress of the project by posting here and on our website.

Its an exciting time to be involved with Stirling Electrical Services, and it will continue to be an exciting time to be a customer of Stirling Electrical Services.
